European painting re-imagined through a contemporary Irish perspective

About the Work

My work is rooted in the history of European painting, particularly from the 14th century through to the late 19th century. I draw on images, ideas and subjects from different periods, reworking and transforming them rather than simply repeating them. The paintings move between figuration and abstraction, often retaining something recognisable while allowing the image to became more fluid and atmospheric.

My painting, printmaking and sculpture are closely connected, but I approach them in quite different ways. The unifying factor is something temporal. I am interested in looking across centuries and finding connections between earlier and later artists, images and ideas, and in how these connections can be brought into the present.
